Embark on a breath-taking expedition through Vietnam’s most treasured national parks that promise a journey that nourishes both spirit and senses.

Nam Cat Tien

Nestled in the heart of southern Vietnam, approximately 149-kilometres (93-miles) north of Ho Chi Minh City, discover the enchanting Nam Cat Tien National Park. Spanning the provinces of Dong Nai, Lam Dong, and Binh Phuoc, this natural haven is accessible on an escorted tour from Ho Chi Minh; ideal if you’re starting or finishing your Emerald Cruises river cruise in the city and wish to explore the park independently.

Cat Tien National Park is a paradise for nature enthusiasts, featuring a lush forest adorned with ancient trees, vibrant flowers and a variety of herbal and medicinal plants. For those seeking an immersive experience, overnight stays could be available, offering guided nocturnal tours to observe the park's diverse wildlife.

A highlight of the park is Crocodile Lake, home to over 200 Siamese crocodiles. Adventurous visitors can reach the lake on a 9-kilometre (5-mile) bicycle ride followed by a 5-kilometre (3-mile) hike. Once there, kayaks may be available for hire, allowing visitors to support local businesses and paddle across the picturesque waters. Or relax by the lakeside and marvel at the crocodiles and other wildlife in their natural habitat.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park lies within the Annamite Mountain Range in Vietnam’s north-central provinces, near the Laos border. This remote park offers a nature wonderland and a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

Shaped by many years of flooding, this remarkable national park is home to the oldest karst mountains in Asia, winding rivers and mountains draped in lush jungle. The incredible network of caves, including the renowned Son Doong – believed to be the largest cave on the planet – are the park's main attraction, inviting exploration and awe.

Beyond the caves, Phong Nha-Ke Bang offers a variety of activities. Kayaking through its serene waters, swimming, zip-lining, and cycling routes provide endless excitement. The park also features fantastic hiking trails, where local guides lead you through hidden paths in the lush jungle. If you're fortunate, you may encounter some of the local wildlife.

Cuc Phuong

Cuc Phuong, Vietnam's first national park and largest nature reserve, is located approximately 128-kilometres (80-miles) south of Hanoi. Nestled in the foothills of the Annamite Range, this hilly park is renowned for its stunning karst mountains and valleys. The dense forest is a sanctuary for some of Asia's rarest wildlife and plant species, including reptiles, amphibians, and mammals such as the clouded leopard, Owston's civet, and Asian black bear. The park boasts an impressive biodiversity with 36 bird species, 135 animal species, 122 reptile species, and over 2,234 plant species.

No visit to Cuc Phuong is complete without exploring the Cuc Phuong Museum, which features exhibits on flora, fungi, animals, insects, fossils, and ancient artefacts. For hiking enthusiasts, May Bac Peak, also known as Silver Cloudy Peak, is the park's highest point, offering breathtaking panoramic views from the summit. Additionally, the park's prehistoric caves, which contain remnants of inhabitants who lived there around 7,500 years ago, are a must-see.

Phu Quoc

Set off Vietnam’s south-west shores, Phu Quoc National Park on Phu Quoc Island spans much of the island's northern region. This beautiful park, recognised as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, offers a diverse range of activities for all visitors. You can hike through verdant forests on trails suitable for all skill levels, join a guided tour to learn more about the area or unwind at the secluded Phu Quoc waterfalls and forest springs.

Immersing yourself in the forest is a fantastic way to experience the park. There are over 470 plant species and a variety of wildlife, including 43 mammal species, such as the endangered silvered langurs.

In addition to the lush forests, the park features tranquil beaches that make a wonderful spot for relaxation. There are also restaurants where you can savour the local seafood, for which Phu Quoc is so renowned.

As the tropical island of Phu Quoc is just an hour’s flight south of Ho Chi Minh City, what better way to start your stay in Vietnam before embarking on your Emerald Cruises river cruise - or, as a fitting end to your Southeast Asia journey.

Nestled in the heart of southern Vietnam's Mekong Delta, Tram Chim National Park is a beautifully restored wetland sanctuary. It’s renowned for its rich biodiversity and the internationally acclaimed Tam Nong Ramsar Bird Sanctuary. The park is home to over 300 bird species, including the critically endangered sarus crane, whose numbers have tragically dwindled from 200 to just 20.

As you cruise the Mekong River and through the lush ‘Delta region on board Emerald Harmony, some of the Emerald Cruises itineraries offer a DiscoverMORE optional excursion to visit this National Park. This provides a marvellous opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Tram Chim National Park and witness its remarkable birdlife up close.

Breathtaking Cat Ba National Park is also renowned for its rich biodiversity and the natural habitat for many rare and endemic species, including golden-headed langurs –the most endangered primate on the planet – as well as unique plant life.
